Swakopmund is known for its many colonial buildings, the most notable of which is the Woermann House, which dates back to 1905. A popular seaside resort, Swakopmund has a nostalgic vibe, lots of tourist attractions, and a great summertime climate.
The large natural lagoon in Walvis Bay, about 30 kilometres south of Swakopmund, is the area’s main draw due to its astronomically high seabird population. Recently, 120,000 birds – many of them flamingos and pelicans – were counted in the lagoon. This is a birder’s paradise, with about 200,000 migratory birds joining them each year.
