You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to activities in South America. Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is a great place to practice your tango. Take a tour of San Telmo market, walk around the Japanese gardens, or indulge in a steak and a glass of Malbec. Brazil offers the epic Amazon River and rainforest treks, whitewater adventures and eco-tours, as well as amazing watersports and lively nights on the beach in Rio de Janeiro. Soak up the buzz of this cosmopolitan city with cooking classes, a trip up to Sugarloaf Mountain, or a visit to the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer. Marvel at Venezuela’s Angel Falls, or visit the high-altitude fortress of the Incas in Machu Picchu, Peru. Foodies are well catered for in South America, with eateries and street markets serving up everything from Argentinian beef to churrascaria.
Due to its vast size and differences in altitude in some locations, there is no single ‘best’ time to visit South America, as every country is different. If you travel in June, you’ll find the Amazon and places like Rio de Janeiro hot and humid, but southern Patagonia will be covered in snow and ice. Chile’s climate can vary greatly. Generally speaking, the months of September and October give a good balance of dry and mild weather in most regions. It’s always best to pack layers of clothing and waterproofs in case you experience cooler temperatures and downpours.
