Encircled by enormous sand dunes in the centre of the Namib Desert, the Sossusvlei, is a massive clay pan. At 300 meters high, some of the world’s most spectacular sand dunes can be found in the Namib Desert, having grown over many millions of years.
It is believed that the Orange River dumped the enormous amounts of sand into the Atlantic Ocean. The Benguela current then carried this material north, where the surf deposited it back onto the land.
Sunrise is the ideal time to see Sossusvlei because of the vibrant, ever-changing colours, which make for amazing photo ops. It’s best to avoid the intense midday heat and spend time in the shade. The sunset also presents fantastic photo opportunities.
