The Okavango Delta in Botswana is possibly Africa’s most amazing wilderness and wildlife sanctuary. The Okavango is a wetland paradise situated in the dry Kalahari Desert, which is what makes it so remarkable.
At the southernmost point of the Great African Rift Valley, the Okavango lies between two shallow fault lines. The Okavango Delta is one of many desert regions with little annual precipitation. Nonetheless, floodwater from its source in the moist African highlands, more than 1000 km away, enters the Okavango every year. These floodwaters create a unique wetland that is home to a vast variety of wildlife. Aside from the stunning wetland environment, there is year-round great game viewing.
Game drives and night drives by vehicle are the best ways to track animals, but boat safaris and dugout canoes (mokoro) are the best ways to see the water areas. The best way to experience being in touch with nature is to go for a walk (at the camp’s discretion).
A great way to enjoy birding and game viewing, particularly during the midday siesta hours, is by going on wildlife ‘hides’.
