Known historically as the Tuli enclave, this remote area of Botswana’s eastern region is a varied wilderness of savannah, riverine forests, marshland, open plains, and sandstone outcrops. It is located at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers. Mashatu Game Reserve, the largest of the Rattray Reserves, is located here.
The magnificent Mashatu trees that grow across this vast expanse of privately owned land are the source of the name. Not one but seven of Africa’s giants, including the African elephant, lion, giraffe, baobab tree, eland, ostrich, and kori bustard, call Mashatu home.
Mashatu Game Reserve provides some of the most thrilling game viewing in all of Africa. In this breathtaking location, you can experience the untamed African landscapes in comfort via open-air four-wheel drive vehicles, walking safaris, mountain biking, or horseback riding, all under the guidance of knowledgeable rangers and skilled trackers.
Mashatu offers a view of Africa that hasn’t changed since the time of early explorers and writers like Sir Thomas Baines, Kipling, and Selous.
