One of Kenya’s largest wildlife reserves is the Masai Mara, a vast expanse of open plain grasslands, woodlands, and smooth hills that is home to some of the most exciting wildlife in Africa.
Within the Great Serengeti ecosystem, it occupies an area of 320 km² in southwest Kenya. In essence, it is the northern extension of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and game reserve. The abundance and diversity of wildlife in the Masai Mara is astounding.
The reserve is most well-known for its profusion of lions and for hosting the annual Great Migration of wildebeest that is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable natural events on Earth. The Mara is home to a wide variety of other unique African wildlife, including giraffes, elephants, antelopes, leopards, and hyenas. Large groups of crocodiles and hippos can be found along the Talek and Mara Rivers.
