One of the last wildlife destinations in East and South Africa that can truly be considered “undiscovered” by the mainstream travel industry is probably Western Tanzania. This is mostly because of its remoteness but the Mahale Mountains surpass all expectations for those who travel there. It is a humble experience to track chimpanzees in the forests because you are up close and personal with the closest relative of humans.
The Mahale Mountains National Park, situated on the banks of Lake Tanganyika, is one of the most atmospheric locations in Africa; tracking chimpanzees in the wild is still possible in very few places. The Mahale Mountains are home to over 700 chimpanzees. While a few of these groups are open to tourists, others are the focus of scientific investigations, but the majority of them remain unaltered deep within the forest.
