The town was founded in 1905 and is named for the well-known Victorian missionary explorer, Dr. David Livingstone. 1911 saw the town become the capital of Northern Rhodesia, a significant European settlement.
As the nation’s capital, it possessed first-class amenities unmatched by anything else in the nation, as evidenced by the remaining Edwardian colonial buildings lining the city’s main thoroughfare. It also held the unique distinction of being home to the nation’s first newspaper.
