In the centre of Kenya’s Rift Valley Province, Laikipia District is a large plateau that crosses the equator to the northwest of snow-capped Mount Kenya. It is a component of the 25,000 km2 Ewaso eco system and covers an area of more than 9,500 km².
The Laikipia plains extend into the Northern Frontier District from the Great Rift Valley, where they meet stunning escarpments. The Ewaso Nyiro and Ewaso Narok rivers feed these plains, which are physically varied and have breathtaking scenery. They are covered in open grasslands, basalt hills, lone kopjes, and dense cedar forests.
Together with settlers and ranchers, the many indigenous communities have formed a coalition to establish a wildlife sanctuary and promote conservation.
