One of the best and most significant game reserves in Southern Africa is Etosha National Park. With a total area of 22,270 km2, it was designated as a national park in 1907.
There are 114 species of mammals, 340 species of birds, 110 species of reptiles, 16 species of amphibians, and, astonishingly, only one species of fish in the Park. Etosha, which means “Great White Place”, is primarily known for its enormous mineral pan. Currently, the pan is a sizable, dusty depression made of salt and dusty clay that only fills during periods of intense rainfall and, even then, only retains water for brief periods of time.
