Essential Information

  • Australia’s national currency is Australian dollars (AUD). It comes in notes of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Coins come in one and two dollar and 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent denominations.
  • The Australian EFTPOS (electronic payment system) is widely available in many shops, restaurants and hotels, so that you can pay for many purchases with your credit or debit card. Check for any additional fees that may be charged.
  • Australia has a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 10 per cent. If you have spent AUD $300 or more with a single business, you are eligible for a refund on the GST up to 60 days before departing Australia. Tourist Refund Scheme facilities can be found in the departure area of international terminals.
  • Wear high protection sunscreen (factor 50+) to protect yourself from the extremely hot sun. Cover up and stay out of the sun during the hottest times of the day (12-3pm).
  • Tap water is generally safe to drink in Australia. In rural areas, if the water isn’t safe to drink, a sign will indicate so.
  • The legal drinking age in Australia is 18 years old.
  • You will need a Type 1 Australia plug adaptor, which has two flat metal pins, taking an inverted ‘V’ shape. The electrical current in Australia is 220-240 volts, AC 50Hz.

Best Time to Travel

Generally speaking, the best time to visit the South of Australia and for the warmest weather, is from November to March. Bear in mind however that at Christmas time, which is the Australian summer holiday, beaches and attractions can be more crowded and prices can be higher. If you are visiting the Northern Territory, the best time to travel is between May to October. If you are planning a tour, remember that the southern coasts will be warmer in summer and cooler in winter. Head north or further inland during the winter.
