Amboseli is located on the Tanzanian border, directly to the northwest of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli was declared a national park in 1974 after being established as a reserve in 1968.
Part of the much larger 3,000 km2 Amboseli ecosystem, the Park occupies 392 km2. Amboseli is a well-liked destination because of the large concentrations of wildlife that occur here during the dry season. Six group ranches owned by the community encircle it.
The National Park includes a portion of a pleistocene lake basin that is now dry and encompasses the five primary wildlife habitats: open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps, and marshland. Amboseli Lake is a temporary lake located within this basin that floods in years with a lot of precipitation.
Big game and breathtaking scenery are two of Amboseli’s most well-known features whilst Mt. Kilimanjaro dominates the surrounding area.
