Overview

In our overpopulated and overdeveloped world, Botswana is a rarity. Being landlocked, it is bigger than France, more than twice the size of Great Britain, and roughly the same size as Kenya. Nonetheless, traveling through many regions of the nation gives the impression of being in a vast, untamed wilderness because of the country’s 1.85 million inhabitants and the 38% of its total land area that is dedicated to national parks, reserves, and wildlife management areas.

It is one of the last great refuges for some of Africa’s greatest wildlife concentrations in an unspoiled environment because of its vast space and low population.

Okavango, the world’s largest inland delta; Central Kalahari, the world’s second largest game reserve; the remoteness and boundless vistas of the Makgadikgadi; uninhabited pans the size of Portugal; and the abundant wildlife of the Chobe National Park are all found in Botswana.

The government-protected wildlife reserves in Botswana’s north are encircled by an enormous network of unfenced private community ‘concessions’, which is what sets the country apart.

Only a small number of visitors are permitted to enjoy a safari experience free from crowds in each of these exclusive areas due to the low density tourism policy. For example, there are concessions covering 2,300 km2 with just two 8-room camps.
